Crowland Abbey, founded in the 8th Century, has a torrid history. St Guthlac lived there before the Abbey was ransacked by the Danes in 870. A disastrous fire in 1091 razed the entire building to the ground. The Abbey was rebuilt, and suffered another fire in the 12th Century and an earthquake before being rebuilt again!
